Janzel Martínez Maldonado

(b. 1977, Puerto Rico)

As a self-taught figurative painter, he works through a timeless figurative language marked by a subtle psychological intensity. His paintings emerge from a dreamlike world that coexists with wakefulness, where space, color, and form unfold without rigid hierarchies, articulating themselves to construct atmospheres that invite reflection and a questioning of the human being’s place in relation to the surrounding environment.

Grounded in a life shaped by dreams, spiritual experience, and contemplation, his practice moves between the tangible and that which underlies form: an intensified perception that reveals what usually remains hidden. Martínez develops a visual vocabulary centered on the human figure and natural elements, employing a chromatic palette that expands experience beyond the ordinary.

Trained in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and later refined in New York under the guidance of Max Ginsburg, his work forms part of collections in Mexico, the United States, India, Puerto Rico, and other countries. He has lived and worked in Mexico since 2013, where he has found a home in which to develop his artistic practice.
